On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia announced the end of a month-long air campaign against Houthi positions in Yemen.

Saudi-led coalition warplanes on Friday pounded positions belonging to the Shiite Houthi group in Yemen’s southern Aden city, local residents have said.

Plumes of smoke were seen billowing into the sky after warplanes struck Houthi sites in the city, according to residents.

It remains unclear whether the strikes caused any casualties.

On Tuesday, Saudi Arabia announced the end of a month-long air campaign against Houthi positions in Yemen.

The following day, however, Riyadh resumed its airstrikes, stressing its right to strike the Yemeni Shiite group “if necessary.”

Yemen has been in turmoil since 2011 since a popular uprising forced ex-President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down a year later.

Last September, the Houthis took control of capital Sanaa and moved on to extend their control to other provinces, sending shockwaves in the Arab Gulf, who suspect that the Houthis are abetted by Shiite Iran.
