His Excellency the President of the Republic of Somaliland, Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud “Siilaanyo, today, led a high-powered delegation to the United Arab Emirates – the first of its kind for over three years.
In a pre-departure press briefing at Egal international Airport lounge president Silanyo informed that in the course of the visit the Somaliland government team shall engage UAE counterparts on various issues related to prevalent diplomatic and developmental partnership between the two friendly countries.
The President said he expected to involve the sisterly state in Somaliland’s long-overdue recognition as a soverign state.
This visit comes at a time when the unrecognized Republic’s relations with the GCC is thawing, appearing to be coming from under the concealing shadows of a Somalia that has neither any kind of jurisdiction nor power over Somaliland despite Mogadishu’s futile claims otherwise.
Sources close to the Presidency say that the President’s office will achieve not only a diplomatic kudo but an economic one, too. The Emirates had been involved in funding a number of projects in Somaliland in recent years.
The sources add that there is a more than fair possibility of the President stepping forward on to Kuwait – a country that is presently best positioned to take a leading role as an intermediary with the GCC to see Somaliland ascend to its rightful place amongst the Arab countries. The alternative has been a loss not to the GCC alone but to the whole world. A Calculated feign of ignorance of the de facto existence of 4 million citizens in a Somaliland that cab no longer be swept under the carpet outlasts its ephemeral ‘life’.
Somaliland is too important a player in regional security, political and economic affairs to be overstepped anymore, sources say.
The team led by President Ahmed Mahmud Silanyo includes first lady Amina Mohamed Jirde ‘Amina Weris’ the ministers of Water, Presidency , Interior and Information Bashe Ali Jama, Hirsi Haji Ali, Mohamed Ali Waran’ade and Abdilahi Ukuse as well as Deputy Health Minister Hasan Dahir Dhimbil and executive secretaries to His Excellency the President and the First Lady.
