The Argentine had been a mainstay of the Liverpool team for three seasons when he was transferred to Barcelona for £17.5m in the summer of 2010.

Since then, Mascherano has enjoyed the success that eluded him at Anfield, winning three La Liga titles, two Spanish Cups and the Champions League twice.

He was stationed at centre-half when Barca beat Manchester United 3-1 at Wembley in the 2011 final and performed the same role on Saturday night in Berlin as Juventus were overcome 3-1.Javier Mascherano in the colours of Liverpool back in 2007 - he left the club for Barcelona in 2010Javier Mascherano in the colours of Liverpool back in 2007 – he left the club for Barcelona in 2010Argentine centre-half Javier Mascherano touches the European Cup following Barcelona's win on SaturdayArgentine centre-half Javier Mascherano touches the European Cup following Barcelona’s win on Saturday

The graceful Spanish pass master left Liverpool in 2009 after five successful seasons that included Champions League success in that unforgettable Istanbul final of 2005.

Joining Real Madrid for around £30m, Alonso added a second Champions League triumph in 2014.

Although he played a major part in helping Real to the final in Lisbon, he was suspended after picking up his third booking of the competition in the second leg of the semi-final with Bayern Munich, the club he subsequently joined last summer.Xabi Alonso in action for Real Madrid against Borussia Dortmund in a 2013 Champions League tieXabi Alonso in action for Real Madrid against Borussia Dortmund in a 2013 Champions League tieAlonso celebrates with Milan Baros after scoring Liverpool's equalising goal in the 2005 Istanbul finalAlonso celebrates with Milan Baros after scoring Liverpool’s equalising goal in the 2005 Istanbul final

The Spanish right-back moved to Real Madrid a few days before Alonso in 2009, ending a two-and-a-half year spell at Liverpool. He was an unused substitute in Real’s 4-1 win over Atletico Madrid in last year’s final but had featured in four matches during their run.
