To contribute towards the drought relief effort in Puntland, Dahabshiil Group (DG) drew a check worth US$100 000 and handed it over to the State Drought Committee.
Both the amount and the spirit delighted Puntland enormously making it the talk of the State.
At the occasion, Ali Mohamoud Hassan, Head of Dahabshiil Money Transfer (DMT) in Puntland, pointed out that the contribution the Group was making in Puntland was part of a larger effort throughout all the areas adversely affected by the severe drought.
“To come to the aid of our people, our customers in time of need is a long-established tradition that stems from the Group’s umbilical connection with its people,” Ali Said.
The Puntland State Committee, on its side, profusely lauded the DG companies for their proven record and the timely, as well as hefty, contribution they have made to save lives.
“drought-stricken pastoralists are in dire need of water and food as livestock on its last legs needs fodder,” a spokesman speaking for the Committee, headed by Sheikh Fuad, said.
The speaker called on other companies to emulate the Group’s example both in substance and in spirit.
Same as in Somaliland and large areas in Somalia, whole segments of the pastoral population is in the verge of a catastrophe the likes or intensity of which has not been seen in recent years.
In Puntland, Golis Telecom, was said to have paid US$20 000 towards the relief effort. The variance went amok in social media pages such as Facebook among Somalis throughout last evening and this morning, not to belittle Golis’s effort but, perhaps, to come up with a little bit more to narrow the gap.
Present at the occasion were Dahabshil Bank International (DBI), Puntland, CEO Yassin Haji Abdullahi and Mohamed Musa Farah, SOMTEL Telecommunications CEO of Puntland, both part of the larger Dahabshiil Group of companies.
