The flag-bearer for the upcoming elections for the presidency of the Republic of Somaliland, and the Chairman of the country’s ruling party, Kulmiye, said today that national interest would rule the day.

Responding to a question that Hamza Ali Bulbul of Somali Cable Television station put him, the Chairman said, “attending to citizens direly affected by the drought” was a first priority.

The Chairman, Mr. Behi, was asked what substance there were to rumors that His Excellency the incumbent President, Ahmed Mohamed Mohamoud “Siilaanyo”, was planning to abdicate from his office and has let it known that  he will hand down his responsibility as the highest public figure in the country to his Vice President, H.E. Abdirahman Abdullahi Ismail “Zeili’i”, who is also Mr. Behi’s running mate on the Kulmiye ticket.

“That is what you media people circulate among yourselves,” he said in a light banter, drawing laughter from the media presence.

“The President,” Mr. Behi said, “is an elected public figure. He is there and he is going to be there until constitutionally replaced”.

Mr. Behi stated that if any postponement was going to happen to the scheduled elections, the constitutional process laid down for such eventualities would be followed to the letter.
