The weather forecast via satellites shows heavy rains approaching the southern parts of Puntland and south-eastern parts of Somaliland in the coming few hours.

This will bring a relief for the tens of thousands of families who are at risk of starvation and thirst in the area. At least 350,000 people are reported to be at risk of starvation in the eastern parts of Somaliland.

Somaliland has missed several consecutive rainy seasons in the past two years, leaving it receiving a spattering here and there that was not enough to sustain the livestock population depending on the seasons for fodder.

Hundreds of thousands of sheep, goats, camel and cattle stock have already been lost to a drought that is fast metamorphosing into a full-scale famine.

In a recent visit to Somaliland, the UN Assistant Representative for Humanitarian Coordination, Mr. Peter de Clercq, called the drought conditions in Somaliland ‘very serious’, promising speedy intervention as soon as all or any of a plea worth 300 million Dollars his office sent out to the international community arrived.
