The Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Somaliland, Thursday, re-assigned 17 October as a day to commemorate all of Somaliland’s heroes instead of narrowing it down to a single day in the costly, protracted war of the Somali National Movement against the dictatorial vagaries and directed persecutions of Somalia’s brutal military leader General Mohamed Siyad Barre in the ’80s.

The Cabinet, at the end of their weekly briefings, changed the day to cover all of Somaliland’s heroes whether they be of group or individuals the common factor being a notable contribution to a national cause.

The meeting, presided by His Excellency the President, Musa Bihi Abdi, flanked by Vice President, Abdirahman Ismail ‘Zeili’i’, voted for and unanimously approved that, henceforth, October 17 is recognized as a national commemoration day for all those who have belonged to or fallen for national causes.

By way of example,, the cabinet named the Dervishes’ independence movement led by Sayyed Muhammad Abdulle Hassan, cleric’s uprising, academics, Somali National Movement (SNM) fighters who, chiefly, were responsible for the deposal of the military regime in 1991 out of which the Republic of Somaliland was founded, and the current defenders of the country’s boundaries, unity, and security. Foremost among the latter the armed forces were particularly highlighted.
