The blast occurred when Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) fighters staged an attack from three sides of the town, an official from the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) said on Thursday.

Fighting is said to be ongoing, with the YPG asking civilians to stay home as it sent reinforcements to the town.

The fighting prompted Kurdish activists on Twitter to accuse Turkey of allowing ISIL to attack Kobane from its side of the border.

ISIL storms Hasakah

Meanwhile, ISIL launched an overnight offensive on the largely Kurdish city of Hasakah in northeast Syria, sources have told Al Jazeera.

Dozens of Syrian and ISIL fighters were reportedly killed.

Fighting was ongoing on Thursday as ISIL stormed the city from its south entrance in its attempt to take control of more territories in Hasakah.

A suicide bomber also blew up a car bomb at the city’s western entrance.
