His Excellency the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Somaliland, Dr. Saad Ali Shire, took advantage of his recent trip to the UK to meet with parliamentarians and other state officials, and to pay a visit to His Excellency the Ambassador of Taiwan to the United Kingdom, H.E David Y. L. Lin, at the Taipei Representative Office in London.
The Minister was accompanied by the Somaliland representative the U.K Ali Ahmed Awale, while the Taiwanese Ambassador was flanked by Alex Y. H. Huang, from the political affairs division.
Both the Republic of Somaliland and Taiwan share a common experience of facing challenges in asserting their sovereignty on the international stage and the Minister and Ambassador had much to discuss in terms of political affairs and bilateral relations.
During the meeting, the Ambassador expressed the unconditional and enduring support of the government of Taiwan to the cause of Somaliland and vowed that this support would continue. On his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed gratitude for the support the Taiwanese government provided to the Republic of Somaliland, including the recent donation of fifty computers to Universities in Somaliland and the grant of educational scholarships to Somaliland students, going on to an in depth discussion of the impact of the technical and educational support to Somaliland.
The Minister received assurances of Taiwan’s continued support in these areas.
The Ambassador showed keen interest on the exciting developments at Berbera Port noting the Taiwanese government’s interest in exploring opportunities to invest in Somaliland.
The Minister and Ambassador highlighted during their meeting a common desire to see economic and trade linkages flourish between the two sides, looking forward to strengthening and improving the strong ties which already existed between the two internationally unrecognized countries.
